Just came back to Switzerland from an incredible week in Alcobaça, Portugal at the 2017 Gravíssimo Festival. Organized by Sergio Carolino and Hugo Assunção, it is an weeklong event for trombone, euphonium, and tuba. It was a great time with great artists and students. Now motivated to start the new season in Bern/Geneva!

New Year, New Start

  • By Justin

I just finished ringing in 2017 with the Bern Symphony Orchestra’s Neujahrkonzerte on January 1st and 2nd to a full hall. Things have been busy as normal here in Bern and at the HEM Geneva. The past few months brought me back to Portugal in September, a successful 2nd annual Swiss Trombone Day in October, a European tour of Schumann’s Rhenish Symphony in November, and a few solo appearances in December. Coming up are a few different tours with Budapest Festival Orchestra and a new recording project! I’ll be sure to post more in the coming weeks…see you!

I will be playing a solo concert on Saturday the 20th of February at the joint festival of Association des Trombonistes Francais and the Internationale Posaunenvereinigung at the Lausanne Music Conservatory (HEM) put on by the one and only Jacques Mauger. I am lucky to have members of my Transient Ensemble with me to perform music from our album Permanent Transience. The concert begins at 3pm. There are a lot of great artists and events on the program! More info here: http://atf-ipv2016.de/en/home/

2016 is off and running, and in the last few months of 2015 a few recordings that I performed on were released. Two recordings with the Budapest Festival orchestra of Mahler’s 9th Symphony and Brahm’s 4th Symphony were released on Channel Classics, and a DVD of the live Memorial Concert for Claudio Abbado with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra und Andris Nelsons came out. It can also be viewed on YouTube. All are very much worth checking out. Enjoy!

Swiss Trombone Days

  • By Justin

At the end of October I was pleased to be a part of the first “Swiss Trombone Days” in Zurich, Switzerland. As a co-organizer and performer I couldn’t be happier with the turn out. We had guests artists Jaques Mauger, Mike Svoboda, Ian Bousfield perform with their classes and give lectures. I conducted the trombone choir from HEM Geneva and performed Eric Ewazen’s Concertino. Also present were the SloBone Quartet, Prof. Anne-Jelle Visser, and Steve Shires. Some world class names for the first edition! Stay tuned for what next year brings…

A busy March

  • By Justin

March opened with a BSO Brass Ensemble concert led by star trombonist and professor at the Bern HKB Ian Bousfield. On the same day was the premiere performance of Monteverdi’s l’Orfeo with Camerata Bern with me on bass sackbutt. Also on the menu for March are major works from Schoenberg, Ravel, Strauss, Brahms etc. A lot to do!

This week I’m doing my final preparations for a solo appearance in Rostock, Germany for the Symposium of the Internationale Posaunenvereinigung (German Trombone Association). Practicing is hard when the snow is good! Here is the new video:
